UFC 198: Déjà Vu

Overconfident. Reckless. Sloppy. No one is immune from ‘it can’t happen to me’itis. Even champion fighters who should know better. It happened to my favourite MMA fighter, Fedor Emelianenko (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fedor_Emelianenko), 6 years back, when Fabricio Werdum handed Fedor his first regular defeat.  And it happened last weekend at UFC 198 in Brazil, to Fabricio Werdum. The parallels were eerily similar. It was like seeing a batsman jump down the pitch 6 balls in a row, trying to hit every ball […]

Return of the Dagestani Eagle

Khabib Nurmagomedov (@TeamKhabib) returned to the Octagon after two years. I dragged myself out of bed at 5.30 am to watch him fight on the ‘UFC on FOX: Teixeira vs. Evans’ card, and Khabib didn’t disappoint. He seemed a little rusty in the first couple of minutes, but then showed why he is considered the uncrowned UFC lightweight champion, and one of the top pound-for-pound MMA fighters in the world. For those interested in knowing more about Khabib, read this […]

Field review: Nikon AF-S 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR lens

This post is an abridged version of an article that I had written for Nikon Rumors, a leading source of information about Nikon related news, articles and rumours. Since then, I have found nothing to change my initial impression about this lens. I like shooting predators, I am not a birder. I have shot with the new Nikon 80-400mm AF-S, the Tamron 150-600mm and the Nikon 300mm f/2.8. I wanted more reach than 400mm, and always felt that the new […]

Nagarhole, Wayanad and the Pelicans

I had driven to Wayanad last December. Spent a few peaceful days in the midst of nature. While driving to Wayanad, I barely made it to Nagarhole before the gate closed (no entry b/w 6 pm – 6 am). While passing through Nagarhole and Tholpetty, I encountered elephants, gaurs, sambar, cheetal and a civet cat. Was impressed with the prey density at Nagarhole. Very large herds of cheetal, and many gaurs. Pench National Park has the highest prey density per […]

Life

“It is better to live your own destiny imperfectly than to live an imitation of somebody else’s life with perfection.” Eternal wisdom from Gita. Especially true for those of us who got straightjacketed into a certain path because we were reasonably good at what we were expected to do when we were growing up. Was thinking about this when I was in the mountains. So many alternate paths (multiverse, alternate universes, whatever we choose to call them). P.S. that’s a low […]
